Legitimate email advertising has got a bad name due to illicit use in recent years. There is however no reason not to use this form of adverting, but it’s often not as cheap and effective as other forms of Internet marketing. The term "email marketing" generally refers to 2 strategic practices:

1. Sending e-mails to improve customer relationships. Either to maintain current customers, or re-invite old customers back for repeat business
2. Placing advertisements in e-mails which other organisations send to their customers who have signed up for a newsletter

Email marketing is a bit like a digital version of the traditional paper mail-outs businesses have sent their clients for years. • A 2011 business survey by Ireland’s Marketing Institute saw 84% claiming email marketing was important or very important to their marketing strategy (reference).
• In a 2011 Focus survey of marketers, the channel cited most often as the best performer over the previous 12 months was email

Thieves are devising increasingly clever ways to use these popular sites to run their cons. They’ll hack into an account, pass themselves off as your friend, and then trick you into downloading malicious software….or they’ll make a desperate, emergency plea for you to send them cash to a mail box, Yes that has happened to me…or they’ll lead you to a fake web site that asks you for your private banking information.

Another ploy are the quizzes and games that ask for your cell phone number so that the results can be sent to you?and you don’t know you’ve been conned until you see mysterious charges on your next phone bill.

So how can you Protect yourself?

• If something you get from a friend looks strange maybe an odd-looking web address or wording that doesn’t sound like something they’d write check with them or over the phone or skype, and ask if they sent you the message.
• To avoid your own account being hacked into, protect your login information and use strong passwords (easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess) that you change frequently.
• Limit what you share on your profile page or as part of online games. Revealing information like birth dates, cell phone numbers, travel plans, and activities that take you away from home can expose you to all kinds of criminal activity, including identity theft, stalking, and home robbery.
• Install and run anti-malware software that can automatically block any malicious files before they land on your computer and do damage.

Once you start advertising your business online you also open up your website to the risk of being hacked, so you need to take precautions. Serious hackers target popular websites, Military, universities, large companies etc as the challenge is to break their security. The risk to other sites come from amateur hackers who just want to disrupt peoples lives.

Passwords need to be secure, do not use words that can be found in a dictionary, in any language. Use a mixture of upper and lower case with numbers the longer the password the more secure it will be. If you use WordPress do not use Admin as a user name,

File transfers using FTP provides a major loophole, if you search on Google there are 33,000 results on how to hack FTP. FTP transfers files in plain text exposing your credentials, so you need to use a secure file transfer system (SFTP) which encrypts your data.

WordPress has security issues and you need to keep the software up to date or go through the PHP files with a fine toothcomb and customise the system, simply hiding the login and admin PHP does not work because potential hackers know where to look for these files.

Take care when using any ad dons or widgets, where possible examine the code for possible exploits.

David Ogilvy is often know as the father of advertising, one of his first forays into advertising was to use postcards for direct selling and later on he became the genius behind the Dove advertising slogan

"Only Dove is one-quarter moisturizing cream".

He has written a book "Ogilvy on Advertising" which is a general commentary on advertising . In early 2004, Adweek magazine asked people in the business "Which individuals – alive or dead – made you consider pursuing a career in advertising?" and Ogilvy topped the list. His best-selling book Confessions of an Advertising Man is one of the most popular and famous books on advertising.

Ogilvy?s advertising mantra followed these four basic principles,

• Research: coming, as he did, from a background in research, he never underestimated its importance in advertising. In fact, in 1952, when he opened his own agency, he billed himself as research director.
• Professional discipline: “I prefer the discipline of knowledge to the anarchy of ignorance.” He codified knowledge into slide and film presentations he called Magic Lanterns. He also instituted several training programs for young advertising professionals.
• Creative brilliance: had a strong emphasis on the “BIG IDEA.”
• Results for clients: “In the modern world of business, it is useless to be a creative, original thinker unless you can also sell what you create.”

The most valuable backlinks are from sites which have a low Alexa ranking or a high page rank, but getting links from this kind of site can be difficult. One of the rules for backlinking is to ensure the anchor text contains the keyword or keyword phrase which can also be found on the site you are marketing.

The page or site you are backlinking from must also be relevant to the subject of your link. It is also preferable to have only an inward link to your site rather than reciprocal links. the more links that come into your site the more authoritive you business becomes, so how do you set about building backlinks.

To jump start marketing your business I suggest following a proven strategy of building 500 single webpages and 1000 classified ads, now this may sound like a lot of work. You may ask yourself what will you write about, the answer is about your business. If you cannot write about your business and what you are selling, how are you expecting people to purchase your goods or services.

I use a free webpages site, which carried no advertising, where you just need to fill in a template, you do not even need to have knowledge of HTML or website design, just type in content about 300-500 words. The site itself has an Alexa Ranking around 204 thousand and is frequented by search engine robots.

I place classified ads on 1 family Classifieds one of the oldest classified sites on the Internet with an Alexa ranking of 110 thousand. Here is an important note your advertisement needs to be written as a short keyword specific article for search engines rather than human readers, so no fancy colours, pictures etc.

Following on from yesterdays article on business leads I received an email from someone in the USA, who had recently joined an MLM business.

Now there is nothing basically wrong with an MLM business, however teaching people to try and involve friends and family is likely to turn more people off instead of jump starting a business. The company concerned seems to concentrate on face to face gatherings very much like Amway (I used to be a member many years ago until I moved to Cyprus) which is fine if you know a lot of people. Modern day living however often means you do not even know your neighbours, so how do you set about building the List than MLM representatives suggest.

You need to carry out some research on the products you are selling. lets say for instance its a weight loss product, which is a huge market but also very competitive. Maybe your product has some unique ingredient, which you can exploit in your marketing campaign. You need to learn about the product and your competitors.

Armed with this information, the next step is to formulate a list of keywords and build a simple lead capture page together with a series of emails explaining all about your product.

Still the work is not complete

One month after moving into our Dipolog house and lot work has still not been completed.

So what is the good news, well we now have hot water after insisting that the hot water tank be placed in the roof area, not only is the water hot but water pressure has been improved. The Glass in the Bar cabinets has been installed

Electrical work outstanding is dimmer switch in master bedroom and relocation of bathroom switches to outside rooms as a safety issue.

One major issue has been a foul smell in the upstairs bathroom and the plumber has has been unable to find the source which also affects the downstairs powder room, the n answer from Mediatrix was to install extractor fans. So I ended up opening up one of the floor drains to prove to the plumber that the smell was coming from the septic tank. He said that was impossible as there was a water trap in the line, so I got him to put his ear to the drain and asked if he could hear dripping water, he replied yes, so therefor the water trap was not working, and I suspect that the trap on the upstairs drain has the same fault.

Glass panels on stairway are still to be installed and many of the windows gaps still need sealing.

Garden landscaping is taking shape and in fact will be completed before house. Garden walls are taking shape, and gates are on order

Landscaping and walls are being carried out by Alex who has a team working daily and seems to be a reliable contractor with some good contacts, we have atonally requested a quotation and design and builds a built in oven housing.

This coming weekend marks my birthday and we are holding a combined House blessing and house warming party so we are keeping our fingers crossed that issues will have been resolved.

How is your business performing

Part of the art of marketing you business online is getting feedback. Now I have been using Veretekk marketing on a daily basis and have been please with the results and I happened to be in Alexa doing some research during which I opened up a Veretekk graph

This was a pleasant a surprise, you could not ask for a better trend. The time frame covers the period when Veretekk is being upgraded and improved prior to the launch of version 2. It would seem that an increasing number of people are interesting in discovering how to use some of the many new tools that are steadily being introduced.

Only today I received advance information of the launch of an in house WYSIWYG editor to help people who do not understand HTML to produce good content in articles blogs and email. The previous update earlier this week was a time saving leads management system to mange the hundreds of leads which the system can produce.
